Erwin Wurm is an Austria born, self-proclaimed sculptor. He was born in Bruck Austria, and attended school at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria, as well as the Academy of Fine Arts, also in Vienna, between 1979 and 1982, after attending the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria between 1977 and 1979.
Erwin Wurms art deals with experimentation in performance, photography, installation, drawing, video and text, but overall he considers himself to be a sculptor. Between 1981 and present, he has had exhibits in countries all over Europe, as well as in several Asian countries and the United States. He has stated that his art has to do with the icons of our time and our society, which are by nature brash and in-your-face. He wants that his art be generally accessible and he has a desire to convey as much as possible to as many people as possible, reaching more than just an elite circle of insiders. He uses a lot of humor in his work and does not, unlike many, take the art world too seriously.
Erwin Wurm currently works and resides in both Vienna, Austria and New York.
